World Wide Packets

Commercial Services Solution

LightningEdge Ethernet

The Cable Operator may choose from World Wide Packets’ broad portfolio of Ethernet products for end-to-end network connectivity, all of which may use the LightningEdge CWDM solution. The product mix will vary depending on the type of customer premise and the services required.

Service Examples

The LightningEdge solution has been designed to enable an explicit QoS policy for every service and is capable of delivering any service or combination of services over a single lambda from the hub to the customer premise. Examples of the services that may be delivered are:

  • LAN Extension (L2 VPN)
  • TDM emulation
  • Voice over IP
  • IP Video Conferencing
  • Internet Access
  • Storage Area Networking

Hub Solutions

Hub SolutionsWorld Wide Packets offers two optical Ethernet switches designed for deployment at hub locations: the LE-327 and LE-427.

The LE-327 has four 1 Gb/s Ethernet SFP ports and twenty-four 100 Mb/s Ethernet SFP ports. Any port may use the CWDM optics and as such the LE-327 may aggregate both gigabit and 100 Mb/s links from customer premises. However, the primary role of an LE-327 is as a 100 Mb/s optical Ethernet Concentrator.

The LE-427 is a sixteen-port Gigabit Ethernet Distributor. All ports accept SFP optics, which facilitate a mix of CWDM and 1000BASE-X connectivity. The LE-427 may aggregate LE-327s local to the hub or it may aggregate gigabit links from the customer premises equipment.

The LE-327 and LE-427 switches provide low upfront capital costs for initial deployments and maintain linear costs as the density of the deployment increases. Both switches will feed any hub to head-end infrastructure from Layer 1 (L1) transport solutions to Layer 3 (L3) routed architectures that provide an Ethernet interface.

Customer Premises Solutions

CPE SolutionsCustomer Premise solutions vary depending on the type of customer premise, the bandwidth requirements and the number of services desired per port.

Bandwidth needs are driven by the size of the business and the type and number of services required, as well as the number of businesses at a given location. Fundamentally the customer will require either a 1 Gb/s connection or a 100 Mb/s connection to the building premise. The LightningEdge solution enables these connections to be assigned explicit QoS policies to deliver any desired committed and peak portion of the link bandwidth for each service. Committed and peak bandwidth service levels are critical for the successful delivery of multiple dissimilar services like LAN Extension, Voice over IP, Video Conferencing and Internet access.

Two service demarcation models are available: a service per port or multiple services per port. With either model the LightningEdge solution is capable of delivering multiple services per lambda to a Cable Operator’s end-customers.

Medium Sized Single Business

This type of premise most commonly requires 100 Mb/s connectivity and uses the LE-46 or LE-46H. The latter is used if the Cable Operator requires an environmentally hardened solution. The LE-46 and LE-46H products support up to four unique services on four dedicated Ethernet ports all delivered over a single lambda.

Small Multi-tenant Business

This example highlights a typical premise that contains up to ten small or medium size businesses that require 100 Mb/s connectivity. Rather than deploy a dedicated lambda and LE-46 or LE-46H to each customer, an LE-48 is used with gigabit connectivity to the hub via a single lambda. Up to ten customers with their own service(s) and associated explicit QoS policies may be connected within the building.

Large Multi-tenant Business

For buildings with more then ten businesses the LE-311 is used to aggregate up to twenty-four customers with 100 Mb/s service connections via its 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet ports. Buildings with more than twenty-four businesses may use the Business Solutionsavailable gigabit Ethernet ports to daisy-chain multiple LE-311 units. Often buildings of this type have an anchor tenant, such as a financial institution, that may require a service in excess of 100 Mb/s. The LE-311 meets this need as well with the ability to use one or more of the gigabit Ethernet ports for connectivity to the hub while still offering up to three gigabit Ethernet ports for key tenants.

Large Sized Single Business

Commercial Services for this class of businesses require services that mandate 1 Gb/s connectivity. For these types of customers World Wide Packets’ offers the LE-48, LE-311, and LE-311v. All of these LightningEdge platforms support delivery of multiple services with their own explicit QoS policies on a single Ethernet port or on multiple Ethernet ports. In either case all services are delivered via a single gigabit Ethernet lambda to the premise. The LE-48 offers the customer three gigabit Ethernet ports and eight 10/100BASE-TX ports. For customers with even more demanding needs the LE-311 and LE-311v offer four gigabit Ethernet ports and up to twenty-four 10/100BASE-TX ports. The LE-311v also supports MPLS and VPLS for Cable Operators requiring an MPLS migration path. The figure below shows the end-to-end architecture with the different types of customer premise solutions.

LightningEdge Ethernet Solution Overview

  • Scalable customer premise connectivity from 100 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s
  • One or more services per customer facing port each with an explicit QoS policy
  • Explicit QoS policy per service with Dual-rate Service Levels from 64 kb/s to 2 Gb/s each
  • Multiple services per lambda eliminate the need for one service per lambda at the customer premise
  • Line-rate, non-blocking fabric maximizes connectivity at the hub and the customer premise
  • Fully switched solution assures privacy for the customer with efficient use of bandwidth for the operator
  • Common platform for the hub and the customer premise with an end-to-end management solution
  • Layer-two Virtual Private Networking facilitates Enterprise LAN extension services with LightningEdge VPS*
  • Layer-four line-rate filtering for securing public services
  • In Service Upgrades ease operational complexities and insure committed up-times
  • Multi-rate CWDM SFPs offer ease of use, reduced inventory and smooth capital expenditures
  • Environmentally hardened designs enable reduced site preparation and installation times for challenging premises
  • High density hub solution supports up to 140 ports in 5 RU, minimizing rack space requirements and maximizing revenue generation per RU
