Commercial Services Solution

Leveraging the Fiber Plant

The challenge for Cable Operators is how to reuse the existing fiber plant investment to minimize the capital expenditure required to extend fiber-based Commercial Services connectivity directly to the customer premise. A simplified diagram of a typical cable plant is shown on the previous page.

Cable Plant with CWDM for Commercial Services

World Wide Packets LightningEdge 10-lambda Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) solution enables Cable Operators to add up to 10 Gb/s of bandwidth per pair of fiber in the hub-to-node segment of the existing fiber plant. The hub-to-node segment tends to be the longest segment from the hub to the customer premises, up to 40km in some cases. The LightningEdge CWDM solution provides the Cable Operator with a rapid path to additional bandwidth and minimized capital costs. Distances from the node to the customer premise tend to be less than 1km on average and new fiber build can be accomplished with little incremental capital from a splice case located in the general area of the node. Multi-strand fiber deployment can further leverage this investment by reducing the cost for follow-on linear drops. The diagram to the left shows how the LightningEdge CWDM solution can be used to augment existing fiber plant to enable Commercial Services to be delivered directly to customer premises optically.
