The 5400 family is the industry’s first fully modular and reconfigurable switching platform. It enables practical transition to a converged OTN and Ethernet-based service-enabling infrastructure to achieve unmatched capital and operational expense reduction and rapid service delivery. That means fewer boxes that require fewer touches—each powered by a single operating system and management platform—to facilitate true network and service automation.

The 5400 family represents an entirely new category of switches that integrate multiple, industry-leading capabilities into a single, fully modular, high-capacity platform. The foundation for the 5400 family is the integration of best-of-breed intelligent software assets from Ciena’s Carrier Ethernet, Optical Switching, and Optical Transport products with new state-of-the-art hardware components.

The software and hardware modularity of the 5400 platform are key differentiators that give network operators the flexibility to configure and optimize these systems for a variety of applications. Possible configurations include:

  • Layer 1 Optical Switching
  • Layers 0/1 Optical Transport
  • Layers 2/2.5 Carrier Ethernet Switching
  • Layers 1-2.5 Packet-Optical Switching
  • Layers 0-2 Packet-Optical Transport

Automation and Network Convergence Software
An essential technology that underpins this modular approach is Ciena OneOS, a new software concept in network automation and convergence.

Designed to common specifications and embedded within Ciena elements, OneOS is network-wide service-aware operating software that unifies data, management and control plane capabilities not just within the 5400 product family, but also across other platforms that also run OneOS. This allows different product families—each with multiple elements configured to perform specific network functions—to participate together in automated, robust end-to-end network solutions.

The multi-platform automation, interoperability, and resiliency that OneOS provides results in significant operational cost savings.

Full Interoperability
As network requirements and user demands evolve, the 5400 platform can be reconfigured without penalty or overhead in terms of cost, performance, features or functionality.

Regardless of how each system is configured, all 5400 switches feature automated provisioning, self-discovery, and full interoperability with the CoreDirector® FS, CN 4200®, Corestream® Agility  and Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery product families. Among other Ciena innovations, the 5400 integrates the industry’s most reliable, field-proven and intelligent control plane from CoreDirector; the feature-rich and flexible OTN capabilities of our CN 4200; and the Ethernet/MPLS virtual switching and automated service activation functionality from our Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery portfolio.

Robust Integrated Management
ON-Center® Network and Service Management Suite provides all aspects of monitoring for the 5400 family. Using ON-Center, Layer 0, 1 and 2 connections can be initiated and managed in a coordinated fashion from a central NOC location ensuring network optimization, comprehensive fault management, and service assurance. ON-Center’s multi-layer management model provides visibility through the protocol stack from optical transport to Ethernet packet services.
